Angelica Root and Gut Health: What the Research Shows About Digestion and Antioxidant Support
Angelica is a large genus in the carrot family (Apiaceae) — the same botanical family as fennel, parsley, and celery — with dozens of species used across Asian, European, and North American traditional medicine. A 2023 review in Molecules pulled together the published research on the genus, with particular focus on Angelica dahurica (known as Bai Zhi in Chinese medicine), covering its phytochemistry and biological activities from studies dating back to 2000.
A Long History as a Digestive Herb
Across Chinese, Korean, and Japanese traditional medicine, Angelica dahurica root has long been used for intestinal disorders — including diarrhea, dysentery, and chronic ulcerative colitis — alongside its use for headaches, colds, and skin conditions. Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai), a related and equally well-studied species, has traditional use for regulating digestion and, notably, is described as helping “relax the bowels in constipation.”
What the Research Adds
Effect on Gut Flora
A polysaccharide isolated from A. dahurica was tested directly on gut microbiota: mice given 200 mg/kg daily for 21 days showed measurable changes in fecal microbial composition and structure, leading researchers to describe the polysaccharide as a potential prebiotic — a compound that feeds and shapes beneficial gut bacteria rather than acting as a drug itself.
Antispasmodic Activity
Ligustilide and related phthalide compounds found in Angelica roots showed antispasmodic activity against smooth muscle contractions — including uterine and, relevantly, intestinal smooth muscle — through a mechanism the researchers describe as non-specific and distinct from papaverine, a reference antispasmodic drug. This lines up with the traditional use of Angelica for digestive discomfort and cramping.
Antioxidant Capacity
Aqueous and ethanol extracts of A. dahurica root scavenged DPPH and ABTS free radicals at low concentrations (IC₅₀ as low as 0.13–0.32 mg/mL) and inhibited nitric oxide production in immune cells exposed to bacterial toxins — a marker of reduced inflammatory signaling — while also showing potent reducing power and DNA-damage protection in the same study.
Broader Findings
The review also documents antimicrobial activity against several gut-relevant bacterial species, hepatoprotective effects in animal models of drug-induced liver injury, and — through a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide isolated from the related species A. sinensis — immune-stimulating activity linked in part to the plant’s natural content of vitamin B12, folinic acid, and biotin.
The Bottom Line
The evidence for Angelica root centers on three complementary mechanisms relevant to digestive health: a prebiotic-like effect on gut bacterial composition, a genuine antispasmodic action on intestinal smooth muscle, and a strong antioxidant capacity that helps explain its long traditional use for digestive complaints. Most of the supporting data comes from cell and animal studies rather than human clinical trials, which is typical for a botanical with this long a traditional-use history and still relatively young formal research base.
